More than $500K Raised for Children of La. Police Shooting Victim

An online college fund for Alton Sterling's five children has reached more than $500,000 in donations.
 
Sterling, 37, was shot by police during a confrontation earlier this week, sparking an uproar about race relations across the nation. 

Many people decided the best way they could help Sterling's surviving family is to help send his children to college for free. 

Actress and writer Issa Rae stepped in and started a "go-fund-me" campaign to be "sympathetic and empathetic" to the children who recently lost their father. The original goal was to raise $200,000, but donors more than doubled that amount in less than 24 hours. The funds are continuing the pour in for the family. 

Meanwhile, the U.S. Justice Department is investigating Sterling's death. 

A video recording of the shooting went viral on social media. The graphic footage shows Sterling struggling with officers outside a Baton Rouge convenience store where he made a living selling CDs. The police officers who shot Sterling are on administrative leave as investigators work hard to find out what really happened.
