Former Heisman Trophy winner and NFL quarterback Tim Tebow is a step closer to playing professional baseball.

ESPN reports the Atlanta Braves have indicated "definite interest" in bringing Tebow on board, possibly for a minor league deal.

Twenty-eight Major League Baseball teams, including the Braves, sent scouts to watch a recent workout Tebow held at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.

A baseball source told ESPN that representatives from five teams talked one-on-one with Tebow after the workout.

The 29-year-old has not played baseball since he was a high school junior, and scouting reports of his performance were mixed. But observers said he proved he has some impressive power at bat, crushing several long homeruns.

During his football years, Tebow often displayed his Christian faith on the field, praying during games and putting Bible verses on his eye-black.

While he drew fire from the liberal media, he received strong support from American Christians for his pro-life views and his pledge of abstinence.
