Bill Clinton: Obamacare 'Craziest Thing in the World'

Former President Bill Clinton has put his wife's campaign in damage control mode this week after he called Obamacare "the craziest thing in the world."

While speaking at a rally in Flint, Michigan, Clinton ripped apart the Affordable Care Act model, saying it has flooded the health insurance market and caused premiums to rise for middle-class Americans.

"You've got this crazy system where all of sudden 25 million more people have health care, and then the people are out there busted sometimes 60 hours a week, wind up with their premiums doubled and their coverage cut in half. It's the craziest thing in the world," he said.

He went on to call the plan unworkable and pitched a new system that would allow people to buy into Medicare or Medicaid, The Hill reports.

Clinton received sharp criticism for his statements. Hillary Clinton's press secretary called her husband's remarks shorthanded and said he has supported Obamacare since 2010.

By Tuesday, Clinton backpedaled on his statements, saying that Obamacare has done well.

"We, for the first time in our history, at least are providing insurance to more than 90 percent of our people," he said at a rally in Athens, Ohio. "I want to say this one thing about the health care law because that's another thing they've been trying to tangle in — I supported the Affordable Care Act," he said. "I support it today."

Republican candidate Donald Trump, on the other hand, thanked Clinton for his critique of Obamacare, saying "at least he's honest."
