OPM Chief Resigns in Wake of Massive Data Hack

The head of the government's personnel office has resigned following the massive data hack that occurred on her watch.

A White House official said President Barack Obama accepted the resignation of Office of Personnel Management Director Katherine Archuleta on Friday morning. Members of Congress in both parties had demanded Archuleta's resignation.

The official said deputy director Beth Cobert will become acting director starting Saturday.

On Thursday, the agency announced that personal information, including social security numbers, of more than 21 million people who applied for background checks was stolen.

Information for nearly 2 million of their family members was also compromised.

Meanwhile, officials believe China may be responsible for the cyber attack.
