Grieving Joe Biden Prepares for Son's Funeral

A teary-eyed Vice President Joe Biden joined mourners for a memorial service at a Catholic church in Wilmington, Delaware, Thursday to pay his respects to his late son, former Attorney General Beau Biden.

Beau Biden lost his two year battle with brain cancer May 30. He was only 46 years old. He leaves behind two children, Natalie and Hunter, and his wife Hallie.

Mourners gathered during a viewing at St. Anthony of Padua church. The younger Biden's flag-draped casket arrived shortly after 12 p.m.

Delaware National Guard Adj. Gen. Francis Vavala saluted as an honor guard carried the casket to the church, where mourners began lining up outside.

President Barack Obama will give a eulogy at a funeral Mass Saturday, June 6, at the same church. He said he and his family grieves alonside the Biden family.

"Michelle and I humbly pray for the Good Lord to watch over Beau Biden, and to protect and comfort his family here on Earth," he said.

The younger Biden followed his father into politics and served two terms as attorney general of Delaware. He announced last year he would not seek a third term and instead set his sights on a 2016 gubernatorial run.

Beau Biden's many accomplishments as attorney general include establishing a child predator unit, taking on mortgage lenders over foreclosure abuses, proposing tougher bail restrictions for criminal defendants, and defending the death penalty, putting him at odds with some fellow Democrats.

The vice president said his son dedicated his life to service, incliuding serving as a major in the Delaware National Guard and as state attorney general.

"More than his professional accomplishments, Beau measured himself as a husband, father, son and brother," said Joe Biden, who was at his son's side at the time of his death.

"His absolute honor made him a role model for our family," he said. "Beau embodied my father's saying that a parent knows success when his child turns out better than he did."
