Education Sunday: Churches Gear Up for Back-to-School Encouragement

As students head back to school, one national organization wants churches to get involved by celebrating Education Sunday, Sept. 4.

The National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference sponsors the annual event, which is a time for churches to pray for their students and teachers, assert the importance of education, and encourage congregations to support local schools and students.

"We see that students and teachers need life spoken over them," Dr. Andrea Ramirez, executive director of the Faith and Education Coalition of the NHCLC, told CBN News. "And they need to be reminded that our earthly assignments are indeed connected to our eternal purpose."

"That's our prayer for our students and for our teachers, that they're reminded of that and that they feel empowered and that they feel the body of Christ surrounding them, going to the Father on their behalf, and that support system is really rallying around them," she continued.

Ramirez said one out of four Hispanic students in the United States is not prepared for college when he or she graduates from high school.

"We believe that the Church is a part of the solution and want to pray about education equality and how we can be involved in seeing education equality be a reality in our nation," she emphasized.

Thousands of churches are expected to take part in Education Sunday.

"It's exciting. Churches get to participate in whatever way they want," Ramirez told CBN News. "We provide free resources; we have Bible studies for children, youth, and parents."

"We've teamed up with Christianity Today and have produced a bilingual college guide," she continued.

In addition, Ramirez said organizers keep in contact with churches who participate and provide scholarship opportunities throughout the year.
