In the Philippines, at least 53 people are dead after Tropical Storm Jangmi hit the island country Monday.

The storm triggered deadly flash floods and landslides and packed winds of up to 40 miles per hour.

Mayor Stephanie Uy-Tan said 12 people died when a landslide buried two vans and six houses near a mountainside highway in eastern Catbalogan City.

She said voices could still be heard from one of the vans and that rescue efforts were ongoing.

Around 13,000 have been forced to leave their homes.

The country is still reeling from the past two typhoons.

Super Typhoon Hagupit killed 18 people and caused more than $100 million in damage. Last year, Super Typhoon Haiyan left more than 7,000 people dead and was responsible for wiping wiped out entire villages.
