Australian police shot a suspected terrorist to death, Tuesday, after he stabbed and injured two law enforcement officers.

Abdul Numan Haider, 18, carried out the attack after he was asked to answer questions at a Melbourne police station.

"Our members had no inkling that this individual posed a threat to them and as far as we were concerned, it was going to be an amicable discussion about that individual's behavior," USA Today quoted Victoria state police Assistant Commissioner Luke Cornelius.

Cornelius said the officer had "no choice" but to shoot the suspect.

Police say Haider, whom the Wall Street Journal reports was waiving an Islamic State flag in a shopping center last week, was a person of interest and had his passport canceled on grounds of national security.

Some experts suspect Tuesday's attack was prompted by ISIS calling on supporters in other countries to wage war wherever they are.

"Obviously this indicates that there are people in our community who are capable of very extreme acts. It also indicates that the police will be constantly vigilant to protect us against people who would do us harm," Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said.
