Christian activists took to the Chinese embassy in Washington, D.C., this week to protest the forced removal of crosses from hundreds of churches in China.

Rev. Patrick Mahoney, director of the Christian Defense Coalition, carried a large wooden cross. Others used bullhorns to express their appeal for religious freedom in China.

Officials in China's Zhejiang province have toppled crosses from more than 400 churches since early 2014. They say the crosses violate building codes.

But outside observers say the growth of Christian groups has made the ruling Communist Party nervous.
