Canadian police say a man who was shot Wednesday night was plotting a suicide bombing.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said they received "credible information" that Aaron Driver, 24, who had been previously banned from associating with ISIS, was planning to carry out a terror attack in a public area.

"The RCMP received credible information of a potential terrorist threat," police said in a statement Wednesday, CBC reported. "A suspect was identified and the proper course of action has been taken to ensure that there is no danger to the public's safety.

"As this is still an unfolding matter and that the investigation is still underway, we are not able to provide further comment at this time," the statement concluded.

According to CBC, police told Driver's family they were forced to shoot him because he was planning to detonate a second device.

Meanwhile, departing U.S. commander Lt. Gen. Sean MacFarland told reporters two years of airstrikes on ISIS jihadists has reduced their numbers dramatically.

According to MacFarland, 45,000 ISIS fighters in Iraq and Syria have been reduced to as few as 15,000.

"The enemy is in retreat on all fronts," he said.

Still, it is difficult to verify the numbers. Other estimates put the number of ISIS fighters as high as 25,000.
