Islamic extremists launched a deadly attack during a large prayer gathering in northern Bangladesh Thursday, marking the Muslim Eid-al-Fitr holiday at the end of Ramadan.

The gunmen hurled homemade bombs and engaged in a firefight with police at a checkpoint about a kilometer from the gathering.

At least one of the bombs exploded during the prayer gathering attended by more than 250,000 people.

Two police officers and one of the gunmen were killed and at least a dozen others were injured.

The violence comes just days after the deadly hostage crisis at an upscale restaurant left 28 people dead.
