North Korea test fired three suspected medium-range missiles Monday that traveled about 620 miles and landed near Japan.

According to officials in Seoul, South Korea, the launch was a show of force timed to coincide with the G-20 economic summit in China.

North Korea has carried out a series of missile tests recently with increasing range. The tests have been part of a program that aims to eventually build long-range nuclear missiles capable of reaching the United States mainland.

Late last month, the U.N. Security Council strongly condemned four North Korean ballistic missile launches that took place in July and August.

The council called them "grave violations" of a ban on all ballistic missile activity.
