Designed by God

When people think of God, what comes to mind first—or even second, third, or fourth—is probably not “fashion designer.” And yet, when we read the book of Exodus 39, we’re reminded that God told Moses exactly how to create the priestly robes.

The craftsmen made beautiful sacred garments of blue, purple, and scarlet cloth—clothing for Aaron to wear while ministering in the Holy Place, just as the Lord had commanded Moses (Exodus 39:1 NLT).

But not only did God choose the colors, He gave instructions in verses 2 and 3 about using real gold, shredded into threads, to be woven into the priestly linen apron with additional threads of blue, purple and scarlet. Such extravagant detail work! And, as with any great designer, God loves details. He pays attention to everything.

Turning that around, do we pay attention to what He has created? Do we notice the details in descriptions throughout Scripture and in our lives too?

Sometimes, especially on a really bad day, everything feels a little better when you step outside at night and gaze at the brilliant stars, or when you listen for the birds singing, or when you look into the eyes of your pet-family members. All of these God created. And He created us…

So, what do we see when we look in a mirror? Do we notice the beauty and magnificence in ourselves—not in a haughty way, but in a way that honors our Creator, our very own Father? “I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb,” God said in Jeremiah 1:5.

And in Psalm 139:13-14, it is written: You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it.

Consider the words knit me together and workmanship. We are each a perfect design of our Father God—unique and beautiful in our own way, made in His very own image.

And as much as God must have enjoyed designing those majestic clothes for Aaron, His love in designing you, and every one of us, pales in comparison. “I have loved you … with an everlasting love” (Jeremiah 31:3).

Dear Father God, thank You for Your creative design in all Your children… Help us to see ourselves, and others, the way You do—and to know how much You love each one of us. Amen.
