How Former QVC Host Saw God’s Love and Grace through Grief

Beth and Dan Wheeler were living the American dream. They were happily married, had two beautiful daughters, loved God, lived in a beautiful home, and Dan had a thriving career as an on-air television host for QVC. But on October 19, 2012, during an ultrasound of her abdomen, the technician told Beth that she didn’t like what she was seeing. A few days later, on October 24th a cancer diagnosis was confirmed. The doctor was hopeful that the cancer might be contained to Beth’s uterus and surgery was scheduled for November 14th. Dan explains, “I started praying… the day Beth’s doctor thought she might have cancer. I continued to be in an almost constant state of prayer for the next three years… I had no idea how difficult those years would be, or how steep the mountain was that we were about to climb.” After surgery, the surgeon told Dan, “I removed as much as I could. Unfortunately, this is a more aggressive form of cancer than I thought, and it has spread throughout her abdomen into many vital organs.”

The next three years were a roller coaster for the family. They tried to make the most of every moment by taking trips together, making memories, and soaking up every ounce of love that Beth so easily poured out. Those years taught Dan to slow down. He says, “Don’t miss the simple moments with your loved ones, for there will come a time when you realize those simple moments are the most important moments of your life.” As they believed God for a miracle, they tried to remain positive. For example, when Beth had chemotherapy, they called them their “Chemo Dates.” Dan always brought hot coffee and chocolate croissants and they used that time to talk and share their love. During that time, Dan still had to find the strength to host QVC. “I needed a miracle every night I was in front of the cameras. I know that many of the QVC viewers were praying for Beth and my family. Your prayers helped pull us through!”

On October 30, 2015, Dan’s wife of thirty-one years, passed into eternity after a three- year battle with stage IV cancer.  Through this difficult time, he saw many powerful examples of God’s love and grace.

Beth was such a giver of kindness, love, compassion, and service. One night, while  attending a friend’s wedding, Beth noticed an elderly man sitting alone at the reception. He recalls, “Nobody was paying attention to him… She not only brought him to the table, but she also made him feel like he was the most important person in the world! I knew that night this she was the girl I wanted to marry.” This was how Beth treated everyone she came in contact with and it’s also why her niece referred to her aunt as someone whose love is like a hurricane. Beth’s genuine care also affected the hospital staff around her. They fell in love with her.

The first year after Dan lost Beth was especially difficult. Dan explains, “If you are grieving or caring for someone who is terminally ill, just know that the ‘the year of firsts’ is coming. But have hope that you will make it through. The year of seconds will be a little easier. What’s important now is to live in the ‘moment.’” He gives seven tips on how to get through that first year: 1. Recognize that these days will be tough. 2. Express how you feel. 3. Celebrate holidays and honor their memory. 4. Live in the moments that you have. 5. Hold on to hope. 6. Lean on your family and friends. 7. Remember that God will never leave you.

Dan retired from QVC at the end of 2017 after twenty- nine years to pursue full time ministry.  He has interviewed hundreds of superstars from the world of sports, entertainment, politics and industry.  His long list of interviews includes Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Cal Ripken, Jr., George Foreman, Magic Johnson, Joe Montana, Dan Marino, Bob Hope, Charlton Heston, Smokey Robinson, Willie Nelson, Darryl Hall and John Oates along with many others. In 2016, he formed Fearless Faith Ministries with two college friends.  They currently produce short, inspirational messages every day on their Facebook page @FFM60.
