Only On Brody File: Joe Scarborough On His Talk Radio Show Critics: "Most Of These Guys Couldn’t Get Elected Dog Catcher"

In an interview you will only see on The Brody File, MSNBC Morning Joe Host Joe Scarborough has the following to say about conservative radio-talk show hosts who criticize him: “Most of these guys couldn’t get elected dog catcher.” Scarborough acknowledges the popularity of these shows but says he’s interested in making sure the Republican Party wins future elections. “Getting a big audience on radio and winning elections those are two completely different things.”

There’s no doubt that ever since Scarborough has settled in at MSNBC, he has ticked off a certain section of conservatives. Some might call them “far right” but they would define themselves as principled constitutional conservatives. Which side will win? The faction of the GOP that says the message has to be broader and less threatening to win elections? Or the so-called constitutional conservatives, who believe winning elections DOES NOT trump sacrificing principles. This is the battle being played out within the GOP right now on both an ideological and pragmatic level.

The Brody File recently spoke with Scarborough on the set of his popular morning show. We not only talked on the set but also visited his office at 30 Rock where he shared some personal stories as well.

You can watch the national profile story on Joe Scarborough Wednesday on The 700 Club. It airs on the ABC Family Channel at 10am and repeats at 11pm.

David Brody: "What do you make of people like Mark Levin, Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, even Matt Drudge? Maybe not Drudge so much but the talk radio guys that have the ear of the heartland in this country? A lot of people in the heartland of this country?

Joe Scarborough: I'm friends with Rush. I don't know Matt but nobody knows Matt but I go to the Drudge Report every morning. It's just this habit I've been in since 1998 but a lot of these talk radio guys they’re just carbon copies of Rush. Rush made a lot of money. They decided they were going to copy Rush and most of these guys couldn’t get elected dog catcher. They just couldn’t but this is important and conservatives need to understand this, I don’t knock them, they’ve got a great business model. They speak to the most intense segment of the conservative movement, they make a lot of money because of it but getting a big audience on radio and winning elections those are two completely different things. You’ve got to reach out to different people. The swing voters in the Philly suburbs, in the I-4 corridor, the swing voters who voted for Barack Obama twice but voted for George W. Bush twice and then voted for Bill Clinton twice and then voted for Ronald Reagan twice, those aren’t people that are watching or listening to these ideologically charged programs. Those people are preaching to the converted, they’re preaching to the choir and that’s fine because guess what? A lot of people like listening to Rush, a lot of people love listening to Sean, a lot of people love listening to Mark Levin and that’s their right just like a lot of people like watching Rachel Maddow and a lot of people like watching people on MSNBC. We just can’t confuse political entertainment with what draws people to the polls…”
