Book Review: The Sacred Echo by Margaret Feinberg

The Sacred Echo

"The Sacred Echo" challenges readers not to listen for the seemingly distant voice of God as much as to listen for the echo. When God really wants to get your attention, he doesn’t just say something once, he echoes. He speaks through a Sunday sermon, a chance conversation with a friend the next day, and even a random email. The same theme, idea, impression, or lesson will repeat itself in surprising and unexpected ways until you realize that maybe, just maybe, God is at work.

I’ve read many different books over the years and I can honestly say that Margaret Feinberg’s The Sacred Echo is unique in a most appealing way. Margaret has a way with words. She’s interesting, witty, insightful, and quirky (in a good way). Although my intention was to read and review The Sacred Echo in a timely manner—I found myself moving through the book much more slowly than I had anticipated. Like a creamy bowl of lobster bisque, this book invited me to savor, taste, and enjoy…..slowly. Many times, after coming to a particularly interesting bit, I would take off my reading glasses, set the book on my lap, and just look out the window, thinking deeply about something Margaret had written.

In The Sacred Echo Feinberg addresses different aspects of prayer—repetitive prayer, unanswered prayer, and believing prayer. By using her own prayer life as an example, she urges Christians to press closer to God—to pursue Him, to fall more deeply in love with Him, and to trust Him completely. Mostly she encourages readers to perk up their ears and begin to listen with increased sensitivity to what God is saying through those sacred echoes—and then to boldly obey.
