Risen: Joseph Fiennes Stars in Re-Telling of Jesus' Resurrection
News from Hollywood points to some interesting developments from the Sony Pictures/AFFIRM Films camp, the same group who brought us faith and family favorites, Soul Surfer, Courageous and When the Game Stands Tall.
Their new venture into the world of Bible-centric movies has led to Risen, a film they say picks up where Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ left off.
According to the latest news release, Risen is described as "an epic biblical story of the weeks immediately following Jesus’ death on the cross, as seen through the eyes of the unbelieving Clavius (Joseph Fiennes, Shakespeare in Love), a high-ranking Roman military tribune. Clavius and his aide Lucius (Tom Felton, Harry Potter series) are instructed by Pontius Pilate to ensure that Jesus’ radical followers don’t steal His body and claim resurrection. When the body goes missing within days, Clavius’ mission is to find the body, dispel rumors of a risen Messiah and prevent an uprising in Jerusalem."
AFFIRM Films senior vice president Rich Peluso is one of the forces behind this new take on this time in biblical history.
"Risen is a gripping story of a top Roman official ordered to prove Jesus' resurrection was a hoax by finding the body and crushing His few but passionate followers," says Peluso. "Christians know it was no hoax. But seeing a doubter, a skeptic, unravel the mystery of Jesus' death and resurrection brings a new outsider’s perspective to the Gospel's account of the most important event in human history."
Risen is scheduled for a wide release in theaters nationwide on Friday, February 19, 2016.
