The Shack Trailer: William Paul Young's Book on the Big Screen

The Shack movie

Only in its first week on YouTube, the official trailer for The Shack, starring Sam Worthington and Octavia Spencer, is already nearing 1 million views.

This intriguing trailer for the March 3, 2017 release follows the mysterious journey of Mack (Worthington) as he grieves the loss of his daughter, Missy.

From the producers of Life of Pi and The Blind Side, the new film is based on the widely popular and controversial book by William Paul Young. Released in 2007, The Shack broke records, selling more than 20 million copies worldwide. But, it also raised serious questions in the faith community for its portrayal of God as a black woman named Papa (Spencer).

Young originally wrote the book as a gift to his children and according to an interview on The Drew Marshall Show meant for it to be a sort of allegory about "the house you build out of your own pain".

Speaking with CBN.com, Young shared why he thought The Shack struck a nerve with readers.

"It gave people a language to talk about God in a way that wasn’t religious, but fundamentally relationally.... It gave people permission to tell each other their stories, their great sadnesses.... It resonated across every kind of barrier you can imagine, and into every kind of place you can imagine." - William P. Young
