Watch the Trailer for Steve McQueen: American Icon
Steve McQueen is The King of Cool. A Hollywood superstar in the '60s and '70s, McQueen had everything fame and fortune could provide.
Drugs. Alcohol. Women. Trouble. His life was the stuff of legends. And he lived it full throttle -- passionately and recklessly. He was his generation's James Dean. Even today, he's a beloved movie/action/style icon.
McQueen had it all, but he wasn't happy. None of it made him happy or gave him any peace.
Known for his daredevil motorcycling in The Great Escape (1963) and his memorialized Ford Mustang GT chase scene in Bullitt (1968), McQueen made the most daring decision of his life six months before his fatal cancer diagnosis. He decided to follow Jesus. Steve McQueen became a Christian.
His incredible life story and journey to faith in Christ is the subject of a new documentary, Steve McQueen: American Icon (in select theaters for a special one-night event on Thursday, September 28). It will offer fans first-hand accounts, including interviews with McQueen's third wife/widow Barbara Minty, family, friends, and fan/actor Mel Gibson. Never-before-seen photos released by Minty specifically for this documentary will also feature.
Filmed by the Erwin Brothers (Moms' Night Out, Woodlawn), Steve McQueen: American Icon is the passion project of California-based pastor Greg Laurie. Last fall, Laurie heard some unbelievable things about McQueen's final months and radical conversion. Being a lifelong fan of McQueen's, the pastor (and Bullitt replica car owner) just had to dig into the rumors to see what was true. The result -- Laurie's new biography, Steve McQueen: The Salvation of an American Icon and the Erwins' upcoming movie.
