Obama: 'Christ Promises Life'

02-04-2016

President Barack Obama has spoken at his last National Prayer Breakfast as president of the United States. He used the occasion to address the collective fears of Americans, discuss how those fears can be destructive and explain how his Christian faith is the "great cure for fear."

"Lately, I've been thinking and praying on a verse from II Timothy," he said, "'For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.'"

The president says Jesus gives us the power to resist fear's temptations.

"God gives believers the power, the love, the sound mind required to conquer any fear. And what more important moment for that faith than right now? What better time than these changing, tumultuous times to have Jesus standing beside us, steadying our minds, cleansing our hearts, pointing us towards what matters," he said to applause.

"I've known fear," he continued. "But my faith tells me that I need not fear death; that the acceptance of Christ promises everlasting life and the washing away of sins.
