Orlando Lone Wolf Attack, The New Norm?

06-13-2016

The massacre at an Orlando nightclub this weekend has ripped apart the city and a community at the seams.

Yet the response to the senseless act is bringing together people of different stripes, offering their support and prayers to the victims and their families.

National leaders from both parties have condemned the act and have scheduled moments of silence on the chamber floor of the U.S. Capitol to honor the victims as lawmakers tackle legislative work in Washington.

Still, with a deeply divided nation in the midst of what looks to be a hotly contested election, it's unlikely the show of solidarity will spur any major legislation.

Terror analyst Erick Stakelbeck believes so-called "lone-wolf" terror attacks, like the one in Orlando, will be more common in the future.

"This is becoming the new norm in the West," he explained. "A lot of times these jihadists who are carrying out these attacks have no direct link to ISIS, but they're inspired by ISIS propaganda online."

Stakelbeck suggests the FBI is stretched thin with ongoing investigations into ISIS-related activity in all 50 states.

Omar Mateen reportedly carried out the attack at Pulse nightclub, killing 49 people and wounding dozens of other patrons of the popular a gay venue, based on his anti-homosexual views.

Stakelbeck notes these kind of attacks on LGBT people are common in other parts of the world.

"Regimes, governments in Iran, Sudan, Saudi Arabia execute gays: behead them, stone them, throw them from the roofs of buildings, hang them from cranes," he explained. "This is happening on a daily basis in the Islamic world."
