Watching the Olympic Torch Stumble Through London

04-09-2008

Standing on Oxford Street in London's West End, I watched the spectacle last Sunday when the Olympic torch passed by inside the safety of a bus. Too bad. I had been hoping to see to some Olympic wrestling or something.

Turns out those blue-clad flame attendants from China are a paramilitary goon squad connected to the Peoples Liberation Army. The London media calls them the "henchmen", and the head of London's 2012 Games, Lord Coe, called them "thugs."

It's hard not to find it to be completely delicious when a dictatorship, seeking to use the Olympics for its own cynical ends, gets so much crummy publicity.

This might be the best Olympics ever.
