Jose Lima 1972 - 2010

By Aaron M Little

Tragic news out of Los Angeles Sunday regarding the death of former Major League All-Star, Jose Lima.  Over the past decade, Jose was one of the best liked personalities in baseball. He had a reputation of injecting life into every clubhouse he called home. When Jose was with the New York Mets organization in 2006, he spent time with the Mets’ then AAA affiliate here in Virginia, the Norfolk Tides. Jose was such a likeable guy that a couple of my friends, who are Tides season ticket holders, got to know him so well that he accepted a social invitation to hang out at their Norfolk home. I’ve been a sports fan for around 30 years now, and that’s not a story you hear too often, a professional baseball player who befriends and hangs out with the fans...in their homes!

The real tragedy here is a life cut short (Jose was 37) and the family Jose leaves behind. He is survived by a wife and five children who now only have memories of a cherished husband and father. Situations like this serve as valuable reminders to us all how quickly and unexpectedly life can end. So, if there is anything positive that can come out of this sad situation, go home, hug your kids, tell your parents you love them, and embrace each day as the gift from God that it truly is.
