In Rome Friday, an imam led hundreds of Muslims in chants of "Allahu Akbar" (God is great) as they kneeled to the ground facing the Colosseum.

It was a protest.

A Bangladeshi group, Dhuumcatu, has complained that Muslim places of worship in Rome have been branded illegal by authorities for various building violations. The group wants city hall to intervene.

There are at least 1.6 million Muslims in Italy and while there is a Great Mosque of Rome, there are only a small number of government-registered mosques. Most Muslims worship in homes, Islamic "cultural centers" or as one official put it, "mini mosques in garages."

Muslim leaders claim police have shut down three such improvised mosques in recent months.

"We are fed up with the criminalization of our places of worship,” they said on a website.

But it is also a Muslim dream to occupy and conquer Rome, which Muslim scholars say was a prophecy of Mohammed.

The anti-immigrant Northern League demanded to know why the group was allowed to stage a protest in such a visible and significant location.
