In the Beginning...

05-07-2009

In the Bible, Genesis Chapter 1 tells us, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth."

North Carolina Congressman Heath Shuler says that's a good place to start when it comes to climate change legislation.

Shuler joined Virginia Congressman Tom Perriello today to call on Catholics and Evangelical Christians to follow their faith and support climate change legislation.

As Congress debates the bill this week, they're joining groups like Faith in Public Life to make sure the legislation protects the poor who could end up carrying the burden of reforms.

A recent survey sponsored by Faith in Public Life and Oxfam America and conducted by Public Religion Research found a majority of Christians believe there is solid evidence earth's temperature is increasing. The poll found six in ten Evangelical and Catholics agree climate change will have a greater adverse affect on the world's poorest populations.

Congressman Shuler says Christians have an obligation to leave the world better than they found it. On the verge of a green economic revolution, Congressman Perriello says we have to make sure the world's poorest people get the assistance they need.

To promote the campaign radio ads narrated by Rev. Joel Hunter, pastor of Northland Church in Florida, start airing today in Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, Virginia and Ohio. More than five million emails will be sent to Catholic and Evangelical Christians in Georgia, Florida, Alabama and North Carolina.
