Romney Hearts McCain

02-14-2008

OK, well maybe he doesn't love him or anything but hey, it's all about being a good Republican, right?

Listen, this endorsement was a no brainer for Mitt Romney. If you're setting yourself up for 2012, it makes perfect sense to play loyal Republican foot solider and just get in line behind the eventual nominee. Once again, Romney comes off looking good by taking the high road and not letting his bitter fight with McCain get in the way.

Also, I guess you could call this move by Romney a little payback to Huckabee. It was Huckabee after all who pretty much cost Romney a serious shot at the nomination. Now, Romney dumps 280 delegates in McCain's lap and leaves huckabee with virtually nowhere to go.

Now, about Huckabee. I just got off the phone with one his senior advisors. I asked him point blank if Romney's endorsement and delegate dump changes anything for the Huckabee campaign. The answer: "It doesn't all." As a matter of fact, he thinks Huckabee is going to surprise a few people in Wisconsin and they believe they have a good shot at taking Texas.

Here's part of what's going on with Huckabee's campaign and why they are not folding. First of all, they believe Huckabee speaks for millions of people in this country and offers a clear conservative alternative to McCain.

But the big subplot is this: Since day one, the Huckabee campaign has been trivialized, marginalized and basically treated as the ugly step-sister by the Washington D.C. insider crowd. So do you think they are going to pull out just because the Republican Party establishment and DC pundits think it's the right move?

Huckabee and his folks have always been outsiders. D.C. establishment figures never embraced him, so the Huckabee campaign figures why should they go running to embrace calls for his exit now?
