Obama Campaign Responds to Gay Marriage Comments

The Brody File talked to Joshua DuBois, director of religious affairs about Barack Obama's comments regarding gay marriage this past Sunday in Nelsonville, Ohio.

Just to remind you, at the event, Obama talked about his Christian beliefs and how his policies are shaped by his faith. While Obama opposes a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage, he is for civil unions and for giving gay and lesbian equal rights. He invoked the Sermon on the Mount in his defense of their unions.

"I don't think it should be called marriage, but I think that it is a legal right that they should have that is recognized by the state. If people find that controversial then I would just refer them to the Sermon on the Mount, which I think is, in my mind, for my faith, more central than an obscure passage in Romans."

When I asked DuBois about this he told me, "As a committed Christian, Senator Obama believes that the central teachings of Jesus in the Sermon the Mount encourage us to treat one another with respect and to love our brothers and sisters of all backgrounds. He believes that the Golden Rule in Matthew 7:12 still applies in politics; it's the rule on which he bases his life."
