Should Edwards be VP?

05-15-2008

Is this the nail in the coffin for Hillary Clinton? John Edwards endorsement of Barack Obama is what you call a strong counter punch to Hillary Clinton's big victory in West Virginia. C'mon folks you know what had to be going on behind the scenes. The Obama campaign probably had Edwards in their hip pocket and waited to roll him out on the day after getting hammered in West Virginia. Do we all think this was coincidence? It sure does change the media narrative. So much for Hillary's good press. That cycle is over.

Edwards helps Obama in so many ways. He will help him tremendously with white working class voters. Watch for Edwards to be dispatched into small town U.S.A as he becomes Obama's biggest defender. Get ready for a heavy dose of populism.

I can just hear the John Mellencamp songs playing in my head.

Hindsight is 20/20 but Obama really could have used Edwards before Ohio and Pennsylvania. Now a perception of Obama has formed about his inability to win white working class voters so Obama and Edwards have more of a challenge on their hands.

Speaking of Edwards, should he be Obama's VP pick? A white male from the south could help the ticket and Edwards has a following. But Edwards doesn't win Obama any swing states and they also would be labeled a far left liberal ticket. Obama is probably going to need someone more moderate, strong and credible on national defense and someone who can help him win swing states. What about Virginia Senator Jim Webb?

The guy can help Obama win purple Virginia. He is also well respected on issues related to national security. He has the resume and a son fighting in Iraq. He is also a former Republican who is considered a moderate in the party. And the guy is a big defender of the second amendment who relates well to the "common man" in small rural towns. He may have it all. He's not a big name and lacks charisma but Obama has the ticket covered there.

What say you? Webb? Edwards? What about Bill Richardson? He could help Obama with the ever growing Latino vote and expand the electoral map in places like Colorado, New Mexico and in other Southwest states. Plus Richardson brings a wealth of important international experience.
