David Axelrod on Hillary

05-29-2008

So what if Hillary doesn't quit after June 3? I spoke one on one today with Barack Obama's chief strategist David Axelrod at Obama headquarters in Chicago. His answer can be seen above and read below:

Brody: Let me ask you what's going to happen this Saturday. If it doesn't go Hillary Clinton's way, there's the appeal process to the credential committee. She could do this, and also, pledged delegates aren't necessarily pledged delegates. In the Clinton's mind maybe that's the case. What is your sense about all this?

Axelrod: You know Sen. Clinton has many times that she was going to support the nominee of the party and that she understood how important it was for us to win this election, and I believe that. I take her at her word. I think after Tuesday and the days following, it's going to be a pretty clear verdict as to who the nominee is, and we have to get on with this. There's only six months until the general election. We have very little time to put our campaign together and make the case and we can't sacrifice any more time to intramural kind of maneuvering. So my hope is that we'll have a resolution and we'll come together very quickly after Tuesday.

Brody: And if she keeps it up?

Axelrod: Well, we're going to pursue our campaign. We believe that after Tuesday, Barack Obama's going to be effectively the nominee of this party, and he has to go out and make the case for people across this country, to people across this country about the change he would bring and make the case against staying the course, which is really John McCain is offering and what the cost of that would be and that's where our focus is going to be.
