House Freedom Caucus Leader Tells Brody File Tax Reform Is Achievable By August

04-10-2017

In a one-on-one interview with The Brody File, Congressman Mark Meadows says the House Freedom Caucus is committed to getting tax reform done before the summer recess in August. “It’s very complicated but I think we’re committed to doing that in tax reform, having it done by August before we break for August is not only a worthwhile goal. It’s one I think is achievable.” Meadows is the leader of this key group of constitutional conservatives. President Trump needs their votes or tax reform is dead in the water (see healthcare).

Part of the problem with healthcare is that GOP Leadership really didn’t get the House Freedom Caucus involved in the process early on. Meadows says tax reform will be different. “We’ve shared that with the leadership that we need to be involved and I will say Chairman (Kevin) Brady on the tax reform side has been doing a very good job reaching out to the Freedom Caucus. We’ve had a number of meetings and yet we need to make sure that that’s more interactive in terms of legislative initiatives.”

Expect some new information on the tax reform package when Meadows and the House Freedom Caucus return from Easter recess, “Hopefully we’ll roll out a bill soon. I know that the Freedom Caucus is rolling out a bill that would be supportive of some of the administration’s goals and so as we look at that moving forward I think they’ll be some news to report when we come back.”
