Bishop: Climate Skeptics Are Like Sex Predators

06-05-2008

I guess comparing climate change skeptics to holocaust deniers wasn't enough. Now they've been compared to sexual predators.

In Britain, the Bishop of Stafford, Gordon Mursell, has written that not confronting global warming meant that people were "as guilty as Josef Fritzl," the Austrian man who locked his daughter in a cellar and sexually abused her for 24 years. Mursell wrote, "Josef Fritzl represents merely the most extreme form of a very common philosophy of life: I will do what makes me happy, and if that causes others to suffer, hard luck."

It was about then that the Bishop's email inbox started to fill up. He insisted on BBC Radio that he was not "trying to imply that people who ignore climate change are child abusers. I am simply trying to use an analogy to get people to wake up to the consequences of what we are failing to do, because if we don't there won't be a future for our children either."

But the phrase "as guilty as" is a comparison, even if the bishop only meant to highlight what he sees as extreme self-interest. But why stop with sex predators? Can a comparison to Beelzebub be far behind? Or can attempts at criminalization and jail time for climate skeptics be far behind?
