Final Review for Great Themes of Theology III
Summary
"I will be their God, and they shall by my people." From Genesis (17:8) to Revelation (21:3) these eleven words sum up the whole purpose of God for the human race. From the garden of Eden to the garden of the New Jerusalem, the Bible is a drama of redemption and restoration that focuses on the ever-deepening fellowship wrought between God and His people. God is a God of promise, and Christianity is a religion of hope. Foremost among the precious promises given to believers is "the blessed hope - the glorious appearing of our reat God and Savior. Jesus Christ" (Titus 2:13). Christ in us is "the hope of glory" (Col. 1:27), and our present salvation should be recognized as a token of a future, deeper consummation. Paul emphatically declared that there is no authentic Christian hope without the expectation of resurrection and of a glorified existence beyond the grave: "If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are to be pitied more than all men" (1 Cor. 15:19). The God of the Bible is a God of history. He is the Alpha and Omega who pledges to bring one day a final and decisive end to the power of sin and death presently active in the world. He intends to establish justice and to be a source of everlasting, perfect joy to those who love Him.
Eschatology, the study of "last things," is the area of theology that deals with the topics of death, resurrection, the Last Judgment, the Second Coming, heaven, and hell. Theological differences of opinion over eschatological issues have generated some of the most heated discussions of our day. Viewed from the perspective of an outsider, the body of Christ is splintered over questions about things to come. This controversy has recently escalated. For many have become convinced that the last days are approaching, and they turn to Scripture for guidance regarding the signs of the end.
For these reasons, "Great Themes 3" is a timely addition to the Living by the Book curriculum. Theologian J. Rodman Williams takes you on a fascinating and thorough exploration of all the major eschatological questions. Millennialism, tribulationism, dispensationalism, the Resurrection, the Rapture, and the apocalyptic imagery of the book of Revelation are all examined with Dr. Williams' erudite scholarship and spiritual insight. He begins by discussing the kingdom of God - perhaps the central theme of the Bible - and its relationship to the church. Attention is also given to the nature of the sacraments of baptism and the Lord's Supper.
Christians must be prepared to explain the nature of the hope within us (1 Peter 3:15). The aim of this unique course is to enable you to do just that. As you study "Great Themes 3," you will discover the breathtaking significance and the inexhaustible glory of the promise that one day God will be "all in all" (1 Cor. 15:28).
