First Lady Releases Panel's Findings on Childhood Obesity
The First Lady's "Let's Move" initiative to combat childhood obesity is picking up steam. Her goal is to solve the problem within a generation. The "action plan" released today defines that goal as "returning to a childhood obesity rate of just 5 percent by 2030," that would take us back to the rate before it began to shoot up in the late 1970s.
There are 70 specific recommendations on the advisory report, in all. Here's a snapshot of some of the overall goals:
-Getting children a healthy start on life
-Empowering parents and caregivers with simpler messages about nutrition
-Providing healthy food in schools
-Improving access to healthy, affordable food
-Getting children more physically active
The report points out that government alone cannot solve this problem, that communities and parents must share in the goal and responsibility of creating a healthier generation of kids. You can read the full report, see details of the recommendations, and check out ways the government will address childhood obesity, as soon as next week, here.
