Showdown at Summit

Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir showed off at the Arab Summit in Qatar over this past weekend.  (Click here to read more.)

Of course, the Arab League stands together in support of Bashir.  So, I suppose he felt he could say whatever he wanted.

Bashir's presence at the conference has created some tense moments to be sure...like when he and the United Nations Secretary General were in the same hallway waiting to address the summit.  Here's the leader of the UNITED NATIONS feet away from one of the world's worst dictators who has an active arrest warrant in his name!!!!  Anyone else wish they could have been a fly on the wall to witness that encounter?  If you were to write such an encounter in to a movie script, no one would believe it!

But the two saved their anger for the podium; Ban Ki-Moon politely lashing out at Sudan over the genocide in Darfur and Bashir calling the U.N. Security Council an "undemocratic institution."

By the way, if ever Bashir wanted to escape arrest, now is the time to do it.  He's in a sympathetic Muslim country.  Think of what the brutal military dictator Idi Amin did to avoid justice...he fled to Libya, then to Saudi Arabia.  Bashir could now easily do the same.  Technically, when he leaves Sudan he should be able to be arrested.  But as long as he is in a Muslim country he is safe.
