Emanuel: How Hope Emerged after the Charleston Church Shooting

Emanuel documentary

“That act of forgiving people is the greatest act of love that one can experience.” - Emanuel

The parishioners of Emanuel A.M.E. Church in Charleston, South Carolina, shocked everyone across the globe in 2015 when they returned overwhelming love for unspeakable hate.

On June 17, 2015, a 21-year-old white supremacist gunned down congregants during their Bible study, killing nine women and men. Just two days after the mass shooting, the families of the Emanuel Nine came face-to-face with that killer in court. Through tears, they forgave him, showing the world a true demonstration of the grace we can give each other -- because God first gave His grace to us.

This June, on the fourth anniversary of these heinous murders, executive producers Stephen Curry and Viola Davis, and co-producer Mariska Hargitay present Emanuel. Their powerful new documentary about the Charleston church shooting features intimate interviews with the survivors and family members who lost loved ones that day, offering us a front-row seat to a triumphant true story of forgiveness.

Emanuel will show in theaters across the country for two nights only (June 17 & 19, 2019).
