“We just fell out of the sky onto their town …” – Stranded Airline Passenger

September 11, 2001 is a day that will never be forgotten.  Horrific images of shock and terror still resonate in our minds almost 20 years later.

But on that same day, nearly 2,000 miles away, a small town in a remote part of eastern Canada shined brightly as an example of all that is good about humanity.

For you see Gander, Newfoundland played host for five days to more than 6,500 frightened and hungry airline passengers from around the world who were grounded there due to the terrorist attacks in the United States.

Rather than just leave these unexpected guests in their respective planes for days on end as they awaited clearance to fly away to their destinations, Gander and several surrounding communities opened up their homes, schools, and churches with a show of hospitality that will never be forgotten.

You Are Here: A Come From Away Story, a new Fathom movie event to premiere on September 11th in theaters across the U.S. and Canada, chronicles those five days where a town of 9,000 nearly doubled in size and became an impromptu crossroads to the world.
