Pursuing Desires, Part 2
After reading my last blog looking at Psalm 37:4, you may be thinking, “What do I do now? I have been delighting myself in the Lord and I continue to have these desires that I believe are given by Him, for me to pursue.” If you have been consistently seeking the Lord for His desires to match your own then the next step is to COMMIT your way to Him.
What does that look like? In my own life years ago, I was feeling like God was calling me into music. But I need to take that first step and dedicate my time and energy to becoming a better musician, a better songwriter, and using any musical talent I had to impact those around me locally.
The daily task before us is to be faithful with the talents and abilities God has given us and to commit those talents in service to Him. Often times we want God just to open the doors for us to live our dreams immediately. I have found time and time again that if what I wanted was immediately given to me, I would have been completely unprepared and it would have been a total disaster.
Wherever we are at, and whatever we are doing we are to be faithful and diligent to do it as unto the Lord. Even if it feels like we are in a grueling unimportant job we are to commit to do it well.
I am reminded of a story in the Old Testament of a man who was used mightily in a very simple task. In II Samuel 23:11, we read the story of Shammah who is listed among David’s Mighty Men. These were all men who did extraordinary things during King David’s reign. Shammah’s story is unique because he was asked to guard a field of lentils. A troop of Philistines came upon them and everyone around him fled. But Shammah stood his ground. He stationed himself in the middle of the field and defended it, by himself. He single handedly defeated the Philistines that day and God brought about a great and miraculous victory.
